Some disclaimers.
- I do this conversationally. Every where else I write, I have to be aware of grammar and sentence structure and all that crap. Here, I don't. I'm not dictating this, though that's what it may read like. I won't dictate it because there would be about ten times for "ummmm"s than all other words combined.
- I'll swear on occasion. I'll try not to overdo it but it slips out on occasion. If you wonder why, see disclaimer number one.
- I tend to ramble. I may talk about other stuff. I may go on (two) wild and crazy tangents, and that's cool. Don't expect a lot of clarity of thought, sorry.
- I'm not big on formatting. I'll do some bolds and underlines and what not, but I don't do tons of fancy fonts or bother with anything involving HTML like some do. Suck it up.
What will I pledge to you?
- I'll pledge to make my topics boardgame related. I may talk about politics or religion or the economy on occasion, but it will always be related to boardgaming. I don't talk that stuff for fun offline, I won't do it here either.
- I pledge to shill myself shamelessly. Yes, I will. I have a podcast, I write for a magazine, I co-organize for a Dallas-Fort Worth boardgame charity organization, I dabble in game design, and I have a Schnauzer. All these things will come up at some point.
- I pledge to try to stay positive. The truth is, some games I don't like. This doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad game, it's just not for me. By the same token, however, there are poorly designed or implemented games and it will be a part of the topic that day. I'm not aiming a shotgun to shoot down designers or games, but I'm not going to pull punches if I think something could have been done better. Sub-disclaimer: don't confuse positive for lighthearted. I will occasionally get serious but that doesn't have to mean negative. Some subjects in our world, especially as they relate to diversity and equality, can get serious and I won't be afraid to go there when necessary.
- Finally, and this is the biggie for me (just look at the date on my last post), I pledge to post weekly. Yes, weekly. It won't necessarily be a wall of text or a rich, meaningful experience, but I will post weekly. It will often just be what is on my mind grapes at the time: design quandaries, the last con I went to, a game I find soul crushingly awesome/bad, the people I game with, something significant in boardgaming news. On occasion I'll strive to post something that is deep and thought provoking, but I'm not going to force that stuff, it'll just look phony.
An open letter to Tuesday,
You suck Tuesday, no one gives a crap about you. At least Wednesday is the middle of the week. You're the day before the middle. You're the worst. You might as well be Monday Part 2: The Suckening.
With Love,
Donny
Wednesday is hump day and Friday is, well, Friday. I'm going with Thursday. This way I can do a lot of my writing over the previous weekend and then do some editing, second guessing, panicking during the week and schedule to post Thursday. Don't tell me if there's other competition dropping on Thursday, it'll make me second guess myself and no one reads this anyway so it doesn't matter.
So there you go, my plan for blogging. FYI: it's Monday. That gives me three days to say "whoa, this is a bad idea, time to change plans". If this is still here and you're reading it, it means I scheduled to post and forgot. Or I decided to leave it in because it makes me laugh. "
I hope you take the time to read what I write because, sarcasm aside, I do love talking to people about games, not just talking at people (or just myself for that matter) about games. Feel free to reach out and keep the discussion going. I'll leave my contact info below, including my podcast that is not related to this blog, it just happens to also have me. I'll likely have a post about that and it's genesis at some point. The plan for next week? Components: why I am a snob who is rethinking his stance.
Talk at you then.
